About Dr. Franc Munda

Dr. Franc Munda built the area between the three surrounding streets (Slovenska, Igriška and Rimska cesta) towards the end of 19th Century. There are still at least two remaining buildings on Rimska cesta to this day. One at Rimska cesta 8 and one at Rimska cesta 10. Initial M above both portals can still be spotted.

Dr. Munda was the first born of 6 children. He studied despite tremendous poverty and managed to finish his studies abroad. He became a very successful lawyer and worked for the city for mayor De Costa as well as for the Augsburg Counts. He also actively supported the idea of establishing a University.

As a successful lawyer later on in his life he decided to financially help many students to finish their studies. He became a mercenary and helped many.

He also lived at the time when the streets of Ljubljana were being given their Slovenian names and when the official language became Slovene. He was a very active citizen, attributing significantly to the growth of the City.

Dr. Munda bought the place from the Zweier brothers. On this very spot, called “na Gradiscu” the first gym in Ljubljana was established: “Telovadišče na Gradišču”, called “Pri Cvajerju”.

Previous owner was a Carnolian nobleman, Žiga Zois, a very important man for Slovenian people. He was a natural scientist and a patron of the Arts.
He has been considered as one of the most influential figures of the Enlightenment Era in the Slovene Lands of Habsburg Austria.
